HBO released the official trailer for House of the Dragon Season 2, the popular prequel, set long before Khaleesi decimates King’s Landing in Game of Thrones. Teasers dropped previously from both houses—Targaryens and Hightowers—in the series.
Created by Ryan J. Condal and George R.R. Martin, last season ended with them again at odds because of a misunderstanding. However, the conflict becomes irreversible when Alicent Hightower’s (Olivia Cooke) son, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), chases after Rhaenys Targaryens’ (Emma D’Arcy) son, Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) on dragonback seeking vengeance for the eye he lost as a child. As a result, Aemond’s dragon, Vhagar, kills Lucerys and his dragon, Arrax.
House of the Dragon Season 2 is the aftermath of these explosive events. Both houses face dangers from each other as they rally other houses to their respective sides. Still, as the trailer teases, the threats from within are the most insidious. And, as this is a Game of Thrones world, viewers can expect betrayals and more brutal deaths. Not only does it look like Alicent needs to beware of her father, Ser Otto (Rhys Ifans), but her sons, Aemond and Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), distrust her.
But the Hightowers are not the only ones facing internal conflicts. Rhaenys might have to worry about her uncle/husband Daemon’s (Matt Smith) intentions. House of the Dragon Season 2 trailer hints at this perfectly, keeping viewers as tense as Rhaenys when she asks Daemon whether he accepts her as his queen and ruler. As the first season made clear, the only thing that can destroy the Targaryen rule is itself.
Viewers won’t have to wait long as House of the Dragon Season 2 debuts next month. So, intrigue, violence, passion, and—most of all—dragons.
