The Ballerina trailer dropped, and it looks exciting. From the world of the John Wick series, the trailer is the action-packed slug and gunfest audiences have come to love, but with a new vengeful killer on the warpath. Plus, familiar faces also appear in the trailer, reeling fans into the latest iteration.
Len Wiseman (Underworld Evolution, Live Free or Die Hard), director of the still-stellar Underworld, helms this new installment to the universe based on the characters created by Derek Kolstad (Nobody, The Continental) in the first John Wick. Meanwhile, Shay Hatten (John Wick Chapter 4, Day Shift) pens the screenplay.
Starring Ana de Armas (Knives Out, Eden) as Eve, the Ballerina trailer shows a young Eve meeting Winston, played by Ian McShane (American Gods, Hellboy). He takes her to learn ballet and brutality. Now older, Eve is on a mission to avenge her father’s murder and—based on the trailer—lays waste to incalculable foes.
Also, making a return to the universe is Lance Reddick(White House Down, Shirley) as Charon (RIP Lance Reddick!), Anjelica Huston (The Addams Family, Ever After: A Cinderella Story) as The Director, and, happily, Keanu Reeves (The Matrix Resurrections, Speed) as the legendary man himself, John Wick. Additionally, a newcomer that gets attention in the trailer for their brief appearance is Norman Reedus (Blade II, Boondock Saints), who’s popularity as Daryl Dixon on The Walking Dead earned him a spinoff series.
The Ballerina trailer shows Eve traversing different locations and pummeling or shooting enemies. Through the neverending action, a techno-pop edit of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” plays, emphasizing the beatdowns and Eve’s graceful executions. With some surprising stunts to up the ante—flamethrower versus water hose—and returning beloved characters, the film looks dynamite.
