A24 released the Bring Her Back trailer. And the trailer does not disappoint. It’s equal parts physical horror and psychological terror. Looking more like Hansel & Gretel in appearance with found footage elements, it follows two siblings. They uncover a chilling ritual at their foster mother’s home. Sally Hawkins (Wonka, The Shape of Water) plays the foster mother. Meanwhile, some other cast members include Billy Barratt (Kraven the Hunter, My Spy: The Eternal City), Olga Miller (Chocolate Oyster), and Jonah Wren Phillips (How to Make Gravy).
With Danny and Michael Philippou writing and directing, their second feature has moviegoers’ attention. After their first shocking horror feature, Talk to Me entranced viewers. Plus, that film balanced frights with a meaningful story of loss and grief that came full circle by the end of it. So, the Bring Her Back trailer looks similar, exploring a grief-stricken person’s inability to let go. But the trailer builds tension and dire stakes as children wind up in the thick of it. With creative shots that heighten discomfort while emphasizing a skewed perspective at this home in the woods, the Bring Her Back trailer feels eerie and nerve-wracking.
First, it starts with a lady using a handheld to capture something barely discernible in the shadow-drenched room. Then, the trailer shows the foster mother introducing the new kids to a child named Oliver, who she says requires special care. But it’s impossible to fully know if this stepmother is the issue, the kid, or both, but the trailer amplifies that uncertainty. However, based on the title and how the foster mom admits she couldn’t cope with her loss, it’s clear she wants her kid back. So, the question is how much and who she is willing to sacrifice to get it. Either way, the Bring Her Back trailer leaves viewers clamoring for more.
