This Monster Wants to Eat Me 1 throws readers in the thick of the danger and leaves the door open for potential romance, heartache, and comedic rivalries.

This Monster Wants to Eat Me 1 gives off horror movie vibes with a potential for some delightful yuri romance. Sure, one is a human girl, and the other is a sea creature intent on devouring her, but relationships are complicated. It’s gloomy at times, dealing with grief and self-destructive feelings. Yet, This Monster Wants to Eat Me 1 is rife with potential for warm emotions and more laughs as an unlikely friendship begins for the sake of a delicious human meal.

Penned and illustrated by Sai Naekawa, translated by Caleb Cook, and lettered by Bianca Pistillo, the story opens with high-schooler Hinako waking up. Within a few panels of this Yen Press manga, it’s clear that Hinako is in deep emotional pain. It’s not that she’s completely alone. After all, she has a close friend, Miko. But thanks to a few messages she receives from her aunt, readers learn that her parents are dead. It’s a heavy loss for anyone but incredibly hard for a child. So, much of her expression in the volume is rife with grief.

This Monster Wants to Eat Me 1 Brings Horror and Help From the Seas

Within the story is a mix of sweetness, horror, and comical moments. Hinako’s loss leaves her floundering, uninterested in living. She’s constantly tormented with feelings of drowning. When a monster comes out of the water, it looks like she’ll get her wish until a stunning mermaid intervenes, Shiori. But fortunately or unfortunately, Hinako possesses a unique scent that attracts sea monsters.

Additionally, Shiori didn’t rescue her out of kindness. She plans to devour Hinako. She’s just waiting until she’s at her most delicious. Still, with Shiori keeping close to Hinako—even enrolling in her school—it shakes up some of Hinako’s seclusion. There are plenty of questions arising about Hinako’s impending death. If Shiori wants her at her most delicious, perhaps that correlates to happiness. The happier Hinako is, the more tasty she will be. If so, the story could wind up a tragedy.

Jealousy on the Horizon

It’s not clear if this will wind up a yuri tale. But here’s hoping. Still, Hinako’s friend, Miko, is sure to feel some type of way. After all, she asked Hinako to attend the festival, but Hinako turned her down, preferring to remain home. However, when Shiori showed up, she convinced Hinako to attend. Still, whether it’s jealousy based on friendship or some deeper emotion, This Monster Wants to Eat Me 1 does not answer. But it also paves the way for some exaggerated hilarity between the three, as Hinako’s best friend and monster jockey for her attention.

This Monster Wants to Eat Me 1 throws readers in the thick of the danger and leaves the door open for potential romance, heartache, and comedic rivalries. There’s not enough about the characters to stand out. Still, having a story with a killer mermaid waiting to eat someone is fascinating. There’ve been similar stories with vampires, so seeing a mermaid at the center is refreshing. This Monster Wants to Eat Me 1 builds up excitement for future volumes and makes readers wonder what it takes for Hinako to be a more delicious meal for Shiori.
