Feeling like teamwork akin to Blade and Whistler, Unholy Blood 2 steps up with the action and displays the pervasive vampire network.
While the first volume dragged occasionally, Unholy Blood 2 picks up the pace while setting a clear course for Hayan’s story. But it still maintains potential surprises. The concept of pureblood vampires and those with a short shelf life adds danger. Yet the story also emphasizes how Hayan is a cut above most vampires. Feeling like teamwork akin to Blade and Whistler, Unholy Blood 2 steps up with the action and displays the pervasive vampire network.
From the mind of Lina Lim, translated by Webtoon and lettered by Shirley Chen, the second volume opens with pretty-boy Kpop idol-looking Euntae discussing vampires with police at the precinct. In the Yen Press comic, he discusses a particularly vicious streak of crimes. So, this introduces readers to Hayan’s first pureblood foe. Unholy Blood 2 shows Hayan coming to terms with who she is and her purpose with a funny and charming partner in Euntae.
Unholy Blood 2 Does Not Skimp on the Action
Like any stellar action series, there are threat levels. Hayan dealt with the small fry in the previous volume. But now is her first test that displays some of her strength. Luci is the stereotypical villain, arguably the type that fails up with an inferiority complex that makes him violent when he believes someone’s looking down on him. However, it also creates a powerful desire to see Hayan beat him down. Plus, since he thinks so highly of himself, the emphasis on the vast differences in their respective strengths is exciting and hilariously deserved.
A List of Foes and Abilities
Thanks to Euntae’s assistance and some exposition, we learn that a vampire named God divided Korea into seven regions. For each, the top vampire, named the “Angel of Death,” controls the area, and there are six in total. So, it’s likely God controls one area. God gives them the blood of a pureblood, and they reign over their areas. Unholy Blood 2 creates a conflict that is to the point, which is a relief. Some stories make their world too convoluted. So far, this series avoids that. It’s simple. Hayan has to defeat each of the vampires running these areas, or they’ll likely find her.
Yet, there is room to add more as the story progresses, especially given Hayan’s past remains unknown. While there has not been an emphasis on particular vampire abilities, it may change later. For now, Unholy Blood 2focuses on setting up the path of vengeance and the rampant vampire danger. Thanks to Euntae’s involvement, Hayan learns vampires infiltrate the police force. This is what forces him to work a bit outside the law. And though he had the opportunity to kill her, he does not subscribe to “all vampires are evil.” Neither does Hayan, for that matter. Unholy Blood 2 has a lot of action and raises many questions about what comes next as they face off against a formidable foe.
Worthwhile Series for Vampire Fans
Unholy Blood 2 is more exciting and violent, mixing worldbuilding while grounding it in the pair Sherlocking to infiltrate and stop various vampire threats. Plus, it’s hilarious when a series has a sense of humor, and the characters criticize the author of the series. It’s fun with a tough, gorgeous heroine you root for because she just wanted to live her life. It reminds me of My Dear, Curse-Casting Vampiress but leans heavily into drama and action. Unholy Blood 2 puts an unlikely pair together to fight the big bad, and it’s sure to be a slugfest.
