Ginger Snaps rose to the fame of a cult classic, becoming an unforgettable horror film. But so much more as it explored the angst and challenges girls face in school and within their own bodies. To celebrate its 25th anniversary since the film’s release, Vestron Video released this as part of its Collector’s Series. So, for fans who want more from their favorite werewolf flick, they are in luck.
Directed by John Fawcett (Orphan Black, Xena: Warrior Princess) and written by Fawcett and Karen Walton (Orphan Black, Ginger Snaps II: Unleashed), Ginger Snaps follows two teenage sisters, Ginger, played by Katharine Isabelle (Backrooms, Prank Night), and her younger sister Brigitte, played by Emily Perkins (Extraterrestrial, Repeaters). After a creature attacks Ginger, Brigitte begins to suspect her sister is experiencing more than a teenage hormonal shift.
While not a one-to-one comparison, Ginger Snaps is like a manifestation of the animated series Daria. It’s led by two antisocial teenagers with a fixation for death. The emotional resonance aspect, combined with the horror, quickly propelled the film to a cult classic status. As someone who would watch this film repeatedly, especially the death montage at the beginning, it felt like the morbid, non-smiling people were finally getting their recognition. With this special edition, there is more to delve into.

Ginger Snaps Edition Has Bang for Your Buck

Ginger Snaps is one of those films that elevate the story and horror before it even became a thing. While I enjoyed the sequel and prequel, the first film will always shine its moonlight just a bit brighter. It reminds you that genre films have surprising gems even without the blockbuster budget. Films like Jennifer’s Body, Dog Soldiers, I am Lisa, Wolfen, and many others manage to stay more memorable. If you’re a fan of Ginger Snaps, check out the anniversary edition!
