The Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 teaser trailer makes it clear that the first film’s vengeful children’s spirits inhabiting the animatronics didn’t sate their urge for violent mayhem. Despite critics largely panning Five Nights at Freddy’s, it enjoyed commercial success. Because it was well-received by fans of the game thanks to its visual similarities to the game. It was not scary. But there was enough to make it an all-around fun time, and the end managed to pull off a haunting quality.
Much of the cast and crew from the first film returns for the second installment. Emma Tammi (Fair Chase, The Wind) returns as director with a screenplay by Tammi, Seth Cuddeback (Mateo), and Scott Cawthon, who wrote the popular video games series. Among the cast, Josh Hutcherson (The Beekeeper, The Hunger Games) returns as Mike. He still cares for his sister Abby, played by Piper Rubio (For All Mankind). In addition to them, Elizabeth Lail (Countdown, You) returns as Vanessa. She’s the cop with a history connected to the Chuck E. Cheese of terror through her father, William, played by Matthew Lillard (The Life of Chuck, Hackers). It seems he’s also returning in the sequel.
So, the Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 teaser trailer shows that Abby still frequents the shuttered children’s game and eatery. First, she leaves a note for Mike that she’s off to “fix her friends.” Then Vanessa informs Mike that the haunted, killer animatronics are out, unleashed on the world or at least the local populace. There might even be new animatronics to dread. If the sequel captures the parts audiences loved about the first Five Nights at Freddy’s while offering surprising frights that the first sorely lacked, it could be the few films that improve with sequels.
