The Sinners set was an inviting environment according to its cast. The press conference, moderated by Jacqueline Coley, drives home a collective sense of comfort and freedom on the movie set. So, many of the cast emphasized how they enjoyed filming and felt like equals on set. Ryan Coogler’s set proves that on-set toxicity is not a prerequisite to stellar performances. Furthering that is the understanding that the atmosphere rolls downhill. Coogler, who’s worked with Michael B. Jordan on many films since Fruitvale Station, highlights how Michael’s empathy helps create a welcoming atmosphere on the film set.
While Sinners is a blood-drenched vampire film of encroaching monsters hellbent on getting what they want, the Sinners set was anything but selfish. Although Ryan Coogler credits Michael B. Jordan, it’s clear his sentiment that “kindness is the default” demonstrates why they are a magical pair. That feeling of welcome and care comes from the rest of the cast, with newcomer Miles Caton pointing out how much love the veteran cast on set showed him. “I feel super blessed,” Caton said.

So, the over-arching feeling from many of the cast is a sense of appreciation despite the film’s horror. Omar Benson Miller (Naples to New York, 8 Mile), who plays Cornbread, calls the Sinners set the “most egalitarian” he’s ever worked on. The level of individuality in the characters is not surprising when you have a director at the helm who knows the names of his cast and crew. Coogler engages with his crew, which in turn creates an environment of possibility.
Cast like Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods, Romeo Must Die) feel comfortable trying new ideas for fight sequences that feel “more organic.” The Sinners set feels like an example that Hollywood could learn from. In fact, the industry could take a lesson from the film and behind the scenes.
Sinners is currently playing in theaters.
