The Your Monster trailer just released, and the official trailer looks hilarious. It’s a romantic comedic with a fiendish Beauty and the Beast twist. Courtesy of Vertical Entertainment, it plants that “tale as old as time” into a very current setting. And it’s coming to theaters in time for Halloween. So, it’s right up the alley for folks who love horror in their costumes but have limited frights.
Fresh off the success of the horror comedy Abigail, Melissa Barrera (In the Heights, Carmen) returns to the silver screen in this comedy about a girl and actress, Laura, whose boyfriend, Jacob, played by Edmund Donovan (Civil War, High Fidelity), dumps her while she’s recovering from surgery. So, she returns to her childhood home to convalesce and mourn her relationship’s demise. When Laura discovers a monster, played by Tommy Dewey (Saturday Night, Casual), living in her closet, she learns to follow her passions and unleash and embrace her inner rage.
Written and directed by Caroline Lindy, who wrote and directed the 2020 short film of the same name and another short film called Aspirational Slut, the Your Monster trailer looks promising. Melissa Barrera sells the over-the-top antics of love lost that seem comical from the outside. Given her performance in Abigail, it’s apparent that Barrera knows and can handle horror comedies. So, there’s a lot to feel excited about with Your Monster.
As the monster, Tommy Dewey employs a blend of funny, deadpan delivery and growling monsterdom. In the trailer, the beast and Laura butt heads constantly from music to room temperature. But a friendship begins forming. Meanwhile, Edmund Donovan nails the douchebag ex, which leaves audiences also growling in rage. Hopefully, audiences are ready to receive what looks to be a romantic, hilarious, Halloween-styled gem.

Your Monster releases in theaters on October 25.
