Warner Bros. Pictures released the official teaser for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Not only does Michael Keaton (The Founder, Morbius) reprise his role as the sometimes disturbing, often odd, dingy striped-suit character, but other original cast members also return. Of course, Winona Ryder (Stranger Things, Haunted Mansion) returns as Lydia Deetz. Catherine O’Hara (Argylle, Pain Hustlers) also returns as Lydia’s mother, Delia. But there are newcomers, too.
Among the newcomers, Jenna Ortega (The Fallout, Scream VI) as Astrid is a welcome addition to the cast. After all, her performance on Wednesday more than proves she has the talent to carry another Tim Burton creation. Plus, Justin Theroux (Bumblebee, Lady and the Tramp), who plays Rory, joins the film. Naturally, Tim Burton directs this sequel to his classic film. As for writing, the screenplay is by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. As both of them worked on Wednesday and Smallville, excitement depends on how one feels about these series.
But the teaser trailer looks promising if heavy on nostalgia. For one thing, Lydia’s hairstyle is the same as in the original film. For another, a group of kids sing Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song).” Oddly enough, they sing it over someone’s grave. The teaser culminates in Lydia once again face-to-face with Beetlejuice as he declares, “The juice is loose.”
Sadly, the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice teaser offers little to go on. So, questions remain. What happened to Beetlejuice’s shrunken head? Does the civil servants’ office in the afterlife make an appearance? What became of Barbara and Adam Maitland? What about music? Harry Belafonte’s songs created the most iconic moments in the first film. Hopefully, the official trailer will provide some answers.
