At the very least, the series can transform into a delightful read if Holox Meeting! expands the scope of La+ Darkness’s character while gradually building up the other members.
Holox Meeting! 1 is occasionally funny; however, it is not that entertaining. It’s quirky and reminiscent of other stories. But it lacks the stand-out personality in the first volume to maintain interest. While more of an introduction to each member of Holox, no one is distinct. A younger demographic might enjoy the series, but Holox Meeting! 1 feels longer than it is because it lacks impact. Still, if it focuses on demonstrating what makes members gravitate to the founder, it can get better in the future.
The first volume of Holox Meeting! 1, with its original story by Cover Corp., written by Omcurry G. K., and art by Anmitsu Okada, kicks off with introducing a new member. The Yen Press manga, translated by Jenny McKeon and lettered by Adnazeer Macalangcom, follows the journey of Sakamata Chloe, who arrives for a job interview and unexpectedly crosses paths with the leader, La+ Darkness, whom she mistakes for a child. The story is primarily from Sakamata’s perspective, but it also revolves around La+ Darkness, creating a sense of confusion and disjointedness in the narrative.
Holox Meeting! 1 Is Introductory
Using the first volume to highlight the different members of this super-secret society makes sense. Through the first volume, readers meet each member, starting with Sakamata, Holox’s newly minted cleaner. Despite La+ Darkness’s claim of a 3 million yen salary with three days off being a transparent lie—given her stutters when answering—Sakamata still chooses to work there. Although Holox Meeting! 1 does not have to make sense, it must have some believability. That La+ Darkness is an individual who can convince people to join her world-domination secret society is doubtful.
There is too much lacking and little weight to the story. After all, La+ Darkness’s goal is world domination, but not really. While it could be funny, La+ Darkness has no commanding presence. A comparison would be Haruhi Suzumiya, whose goal was smaller in her series. Yet, Haruhi’s personality and antics pulled readers into her stories and anime series. But La+ Darkness is a kid playing at a lofty goal. So, it’s not believable. So far, La+ Darkness seems arrogant and loud but not interesting.
Possible Slice of Life Future Fun
While the first volume is lackluster, there is potential for fun. At the very least, the series can transform into a delightful read if Holox Meeting! expands the scope of La+ Darkness’s character while gradually building up the other members. Since La+ Darkness lacks proper communication skills, talking with others is challenging. Hence, why she demands everyone become her minions. It’s too difficult to ask for friendship. Depending on how the series progresses with this aspect, it can morph into a story closer to Wind Breaker than Haruhi Suzumiya.
Holox Meeting! 1 is underwhelming, given how unbelievable too many aspects are in the manga. Still, it’s possible as it continues to improve. After all, the readers met each group member in this volume. So, now the story must make them care. As La+ Darkness has been around for thousands of years, it can create potential character-building. Showing her dual existences then and now will add a layer of affection for her and their club. Holox Meeting! 1 might need readers to bear with it as a book and series while it finds its footing.
