Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- starts with a bang. The long-awaited series returns with Sung Jinwoo, voiced by Taito Ban (Blue LockDemon Lord 2099), after he receives his necromancer status and an army of the dead. The season begins as exciting and promising as expected. Aside from Jinwoo’s battle, some unexpected twists occur, with him taking a young girl under his wing for the world of hunters. Unfortunately, things escalate quickly. Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- demonstrates a murky moral compass for Jinwoo as the line between defense and murder blurs but keeps viewers guessing where he will finally land.

Directed by Shunsuke Nakashige (Sword Art Online), the season starts with a vengeance. Hwang Dongsoo heads to Tokyo for payback for his brother’s death. Meanwhile, despite many attempts to remain known for his E-rank status, Jinwoo’s plan quickly unravels. Every time Jinwoo turns around, he winds up in a deadly situation, fighting for his life. The first two episodes focus on one such circumstance. Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- lands Jinwoo in a red gate—a bait-and-switch dungeon far more complicated than typical dungeons. It ups the stakes, while pushing Jinwoo to come out of the shadows.

The battles in the first two episodes do a few things—heighten excitement, show that Jinwoo is still leveling, and drop more information about the system that chose Jinwoo as a player. Plus, viewers get to see Jinwoo test his undead army against ice bears and elves. Of course, Jinwoo’s crowning warrior is Igris, and Igris does not disappoint, laying waste to opponents without breaking a sweat. However, it also shows that opponents in the system, such as the ice elves, have intelligence, and somehow, Jinwoo understands their language. This opens up more questions about Jinwoo.

Complex Growth and Transformation

Jinwoo’s humanity starts unraveling in the first season, beginning with the people he kills in a dungeon. While his motivation is understandable—after all, they planned to kill him—he murders them with ease and next to no guilt. But they did try multiple times to kill him. However, Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- raises questions about who or what Jinwoo’s becoming.

The ice elves point out they target humans, but Jinwoo does not feel human. Plus, Jinwoo does something that raises eyebrows. And the “they repeatedly tried to kill me” does not apply here. So, is the transition to a player that made him less human, or is it his actions? But Jinwoo does remember his purpose for getting strong—to protect those he cares about, help financially put his sister through school, and save his mother, who’s permanently asleep in the hospital.

Phenomenal Start to New Season

Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- delivers exciting, knock-out first two episodes. The animation of the battle sequences is phenomenal, emphasizing the dangers hunters face while illuminating Jinwoo’s formidable and growing skills. With an undead army at his back, the fights only become more breathtaking and perilous. But there is still plenty on the back burner for the season to explore—his mom’s cure, the answer about the system, the vengeful brother coming for his head, and what happens when his secret is well and truly out. Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- shows that some series are worth the wait.
