The much-anticipated Carrie trailer has dropped, and it has Mike Flanagan’s deft eye all over it. The trailer looks visually appealing, with a similar color wheel from previous series like The Fall of the House of Usher. Plus, the tension and Flanagan’s ability to pull a story from the past and lodge it firmly in the present resonate onscreen. This adaptation of Stephen King’s novel might be one of the best for those who enjoy Mike Flanagan’s adaptations.
For those who are clueless about the story—first off, how?—it follows a girl named Carrie White. In this iteration, Summer H. Howell (Night of the Reaper, Normal) takes on the role. Raised by a religious zealot for a mom, Carrie experiences bullying at school. As the bullying intensifies, it culminates in tragedy. There have been many films and even sequels of this story, the most famous of which is the 1976 film. However, this is the episodic adaptation.
The Carrie Trailer Cast Looks Strong
The Carrie trailer focuses on showing the dynamics that lead up to the horrific events. Also, a returnee from Flanagan’s previous works, Samantha Sloyan (The Life of Chuck, The Fall of the House of Usher), takes on the role of Carrie’s controlling and abusive mother. Given how awful her religious character was in Midnight Mass, it’s safe to say she will embody this role. Even the glimpses from the trailer show her toxicity as she decrees that Carrie needs to listen to her mother. Another addition is Matthew Lillard (Five Nights at Freddy’s, Hackers) as the principal.
Moving the story to the present means social media will play a role in Carrie’s bullying. Alison Thornton (Elle, School Spirits) plays the lead bully, Chris, and Siena Agudong (Transformers: Earthspark, You’re Dead to Me) plays the reformed bully, Sue Snell. For those who know the story, there’s a fatalistic quality, but the “how we got there” looks both familiar and different in the Carrie trailer, and we are here for it.
