Bofuri 13 is not as exciting as what’s coming, but there is a new level, two kingdoms, and Maple Tree.

Bofuri 13, or by its lengthier name, Bofuri I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense 13, still builds up toward the next event. It seems there’s an increase in friends and adversaries for Maple and the entire Maple Tree crew. But this volume deals with exploration and encountering those foes and friends in unlikely places. So, this volume is about exploration, battles, and trusting Maple’s intuition to find hidden gems. Bofuri 13 is not as exciting as what’s coming, but there is a new level, two kingdoms, and Maple Tree.

Written by Yuumikan, illustrated by Koin, and translated by Andrew Cunningham, the volume starts with the end of the eighth underwater stratum. Maple and Sally both found some interesting items. But as any gamer knows, knowing how and when to use them matters most. Now, the Yen Press light novel takes readers into the ninth stratum—one with two kingdoms for players to choose from. As Maple Tree explores, Maple meets up with different players with different ideas.

Bofuri 13 Feels More Like a Setup for Something Big

While it’s clear the next big PvP event is coming, this volume of Bofuri is a setup for it. As such, parts of it drag, but it still feels important to the characters and the looming battle. With two kingdoms to choose from, it’s a tricky time for all the guilds. Especially for Maple Tree since there are guilds that want to face off against them. Other guilds wish to fight alongside them because—let’s face it—chances of victory increase with Maple Tree. After all, it’s not often a player gets mistaken for a game boss.

It’s interesting how some want what’s best for the guild, Maple Tree as an ally, like Pain and his guild. He might be dying to fight against Maple after their previous defeat, but he also wants what’s beneficial to his group. Meanwhile, other guild groups hope to choose the kingdom opposite Maple Tree. That way, they are sure to go head to head. Bofuri 13 builds up the suspense because it’s unclear where Maple Tree or the other guilds will wind up. But they are all doing their homework.

Divide and Conquer Strategy

Bofuri 13 devotes time explaining Maple Tree’s strategy and the group’s plan. It’s a strategy worth noting for real-life situations, with essential pros and cons mixed with what-if scenarios. The team splits up to contemplate the strengths and weaknesses of each kingdom. How easy is it to defend or attack? Additionally, they test the different monsters native to each kingdom to devise a plan of attack and determine what abilities work best against them. While Maple Tree is one of the smaller guilds, its formidable quality is its knack for luck and planning.

Bofuri 13 prepares readers for a mother of PvP battles with possible exciting twists and unexpected abilities cropping up. What’s hilarious is that even knowing what abilities Maple possesses, it’s hard to predict what wild way she’ll use them. The series manages to keep readers guessing about the player who is on par with raid bosses. While Bofuri 13 is not as exciting as previous volumes, the set up for what’s coming builds anticipation.
