Guide to Monster Girls 2 Is Surprising and Unusual, Toxic Beach Fun

The Illustrated Guide to Monster Girls 2 has many accidental deaths and murders, increasing the fun for readers, if not for this crew.

The Illustrated Guide to Monster Girls 2 demonstrates that the series can improve over time, as it is funnier and downright fascinating. Besides the rivalries between the best and worst classes, the joy of comedic horror quips and phrases adds a unique quality to the world. The teacher of the worst class has his work cut out for him. He must get this crew of empty-headed, lazy, almost feral girls to study. The Illustrated Guide to Monster Girls 2 brings fun, surprising deaths, and a beach trip outing.

Created by Suzu Akeko, translated by Jan Cash, and lettered by Alexis Eckerman, this volume shows the series beginning to find its entertaining stride. The Yen Press manga continues dropping the occasional funny class report. While the first volume felt flat occasionally, the second is much better. The class rivalries heat up as D-sensei tries to get his students to learn.

The Illustrated Guide to Monster Girls 2 Starts With Familiars

In this world, familiars are not the sole companions of witches. D-sensei stresses the importance of taking the course seriously. But these monster girls tend to wreak havoc no matter what. It opens an entertaining world of monster girl training so they can graduate and enter the human world. But the will they, won’t they of it adds laughs. Plus, it’s just waiting to see who dies, how they die, and why.

Their task seems simple. All they have to do is find a familiar. Familiars are not subordinates but equals, so they must choose the monster girl. Not bad, until the witch, Syouko Haikaburi, who already has a familiar, gets greedy. Never mind that her familiar is an adorable cat, Shalulu, that sparkles, even if the sweet-looking feline has a spoiled, condescending personality. For whatever reason, Syouko’s obsession with pretty eyes creates a snowball effect. It’s stressful for D-sensei but a comical delight for readers.

Rivalries and a Whodunit Without a Who

Class Z may not appreciate D-sensei in The Illustrated Guide to Monster Girls 2. They struggle to focus on their studies—getting lost in petty jealousies and hunger pangs—but Class A certainly adores him. K-sensei’s, a mouse and Class A’s teacher, plots for vengeance against D-sensei continue to go awry, and that doesn’t include how often he dies because D-sensei steps on him. But the classes do lead different lives at school.

Despite D-sensei’s warnings about washing up because of the acidity at the beach that Class Z gets to use, it’s in one ear and out the other. So soon, there’s a murder mystery afoot. The Illustrated Guide to Monster Girls 2 has many accidental deaths and murders, increasing the fun for readers, if not for this crew. This volume piques readers’ interest in this ragtag bunch thanks to the comedy and horrific quips.

The Illustrated Guide to Monster Girls 2 brings other monster girls to round out the story. It shines in its world-building, and this volume develops a connection between the readers and the characters. It’s funny in a train-wreck fashion as the monster girls go from one catastrophe to the next. With class in the wings waiting to punish them and steal their teacher, it’s anyone’s guess where the story will head. But one thing is sure: more of these girls will die in surprising and side-splitting ways. The Illustrated Guide to Monster Girls 2 feels more cohesive, spending time building characters and their relationships, making it easier to enjoy.
